Pony Rides, Heritage Festival Offer Weekend Fun

Here is a look at some family-friendly events going on around the Dexter area this weekend.

There's plenty of family fun going on around Dexter this weekend for both the young and young at heart.

  • Fun on the Farm

Where/When?: Kensington Metropark Farm Center, Thursday at 10 a.m.

Why go?: Children ages 6 and up will do crafts, have story time and even help groom horses before enjoying a hayride. Call 248-684-8632 for more information.

Cost: $3 per child.

  • Howell 51st Annual Melon Festival

Where/When?: Throughout downtown Howell, Thursday through Sunday.

Why go?: This great summer tradition is presented by the Howell Downtown Development Authority. The festival is packed with lots of great activities for the entire family, including the 34th annual Melon Run, the second annual Melon Ball, fine arts and crafts, diesel train rides, boat cruises, a festival tent, a carnival and even Saturday night movies, just to name a few. Cost: Varies.

  • Ypsilanti Heritage Festival

Where/When?: Throughout downtown Ypsilanti, including Riverside Park, Frog Island and Depot Town, Friday through Sunday. The event takes place on Friday from noon to 8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Why go?: The entire weekend is packed with fun and exciting events for the entire family, including arts and crafts, kids’ activities, contests and games, a beer garden, gaming and museum tours. Visit the festival website for more information and a schedule of events.

Cost: Most events are free.

  • Pony Rides and Petting Farm

Where/When?: Jenny’s Farm Market, all weekend from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Why go?: The kids can enjoy pony rides, hay rides, delicious snacks, petting the farm animals and even playing on the giant straw maze.

Cost: Free to visit. Pony rides are $4.

  • Outdoor Exploration at the Leslie Nature Center

Where/When?: Leslie Science and Nature Center, Saturday from 10-11:30 a.m.

Why go? Get outdoors with your toddlers and preschoolers for a morning of exploration and outdoor fun. Visit the Critter House, birds of prey, and hike through the forest to discover the wonders of nature.
