Presidents' Day Events for Dexter Families

With schools closed Monday, we have your plans covered for plenty of family entertainment.

Presidents' Day is Monday. Dexter schools are closed and kids will be looking for something fun to do. If this is the case for your family, enjoy the extra day to sleep in! Also, use the holiday weekend to spend some extra time with the family.

  • Storytelling for Kids

The Ark in Ann Arbor presents its 25th annual Storytelling Festival. The event includes a family concert on Sunday at 1 p.m. This year’s line-up includes headliner, Willy Claflin, Hungarian storyteller, Zalke Csenge Virag, Allison Downey, a versatile singer-songwriter, and local teller Lyn Davidge.   • Free Dinosaur Tours

The University of Michigan Museum of Natural History will offer free 30-minute guided tours of their dinosaur exhibit at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

  • DNA: The Source Code (a hands-on workshop)

In this presentation, children and teens will learn about the process of chemical extraction to obtain fairly pure DNA. Next, participants learn how museum scientists use DNA to aid in the conservation of species and to find information about evolutionary history. The program will take place at 3 p.m. at the U-M Museum of Natural History.

Monday

  • Family Movie Day

The Dexter District Library will show the film Open Season 3 Monday at 1 p.m. There is no charge for this event and families are welcome to attend.

  • Free admission to the Henry Ford Museum

On Presidents' Day, celebrate Black History Month at the Henry Ford Museum with free admission. Meet at 11 a.m. at the museum café and explore the Henry Ford exhibitions in black history and civil rights. Exhibits include the real bus Rosa Parks sat on fueling the bus boycott.

  • Sketchbook Detectives

Children and their parents are invited to learn a few basic artistic techniques to capture the wonder of nature. Kids will take their sketchbooks into the conservatory at Matthaei Botanical Gardens in Ann Arbor or outside and create their own impressions of nature. The cost of the workshop is $5.
