Rain Delays Opening of New Community Garden

The Dexter Historical Society and the Cedars of Dexter are partnering for the garden project.

Plans to open a new one-acre community garden behind Gordon Hall in time for the spring planting season have hit a snag. Construction on the garden has been at a standstill due to unseasonably cold temperatures and inclement weather.

"We could get going on it if the land would dry up," said Kate Collins, director of project development for United Methodist Retirement Communities. "We haven't been able to get in and clear the area because it's been so muddy outside."

Work crews began clearing brush and dead trees from the site a few weeks before Easter.

Once completed, the garden will be open to residents of the Cedars of Dexter and the village of Dexter for a small fee.

"We'll have a fee schedule in place once the garden is finished, but it won't be anything we're going to get rich off of," said Paul Bishop, a representative of the Dexter Historical Society. The group is partnering with the for the garden project.

Bishop said tenants may rent their own 10-foot by 10-foot plots from April through October for planting vegetables and herbs.

"Those that use the plots will be responsible for maintaining their plot and putting it back the way it was when they are done with it," he said. "We're happy that we're able to do this. The garden will be a good addition for Dexter."
