Salvation Army Asks Washtenaw County Residents to "Do the Write Thing" and Thank a Veteran

The nonprofit charity is encouraging residents to write letters to homeless veterans in Ann Arbor.

On Veterans Day, the Salvation Army of Washtenaw County (TSA-WC) is encouraging the community to thank local veterans by "Doing the Write Thing" in sending letters of encouragement and gratitude to veterans residing at Veterans Haven of Hope House in Ann Arbor.

The Veterans Haven of Hope House is a two-year transitional housing program for homeless veterans, which provides individualized services to help transition them back into mainstream society. Founded in 2005, Hope House has helped more than 70 veterans get back on their feet to date.

Letters may be sent to The Salvation Army of Washtenaw County, ATTN: Veterans Haven of Hope House, 100 Arbana Drive, Ann Arbor, MI 48103.

Washtenaw County residents can also send online messages of support to veterans on Nov. 11 via Facebook or Twitter.

The Salvation Army of Washtenaw County also partners with local organizations and volunteer groups that will prepare and serve meals to Hope House veterans. Organizations interested in providing a meal for Hope House residents throughout the year may call 734-668-8353.

"There's nothing better than someone taking the time to send heartfelt thanks to brighten the day of local veterans and let them know they have not been forgotten," said TSA-WC Coordinator Major John Williams. "With so many homeless veterans in Washtenaw County and throughout the state of Michigan, it's important that we do what we can to say thanks for the sacrifices they've made."
