Secret Agent Party Coming to Creekside School

Here are some fun kid-centered activities coming up this week.

With schools on an extended holiday for the Presidents Day weekend, we've assembled a calendar of kid-friendly activities and new places to try out with children.

Each week, we'll give you the info on the five best family activities or events for the week.

FAMILY BEST BETS OF THE WEEK

  • MOTHER-SON SECRET AGENT PARTY

Where/when: A mother-son secret agent party will take place at from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday in the cafeteria.

Why go: Boys age 4 and older (and their moms/escorts) will have an exciting evening going on a secret mission. There will be food, dancing and goody bags to take home. James Bond-themed attire is encouraged. Contact Mara Greatorex for more information at 734-474-2033.

  • MICHIGAN WILDLIFE PRESENTATION

 Where/when: The  will host a presentation on Michigan wildlife at 11 a.m. Friday.

Why go: With schools out for a long weekend for Presidents Day, come discover the wonderful and fascinating world of Michigan wildlife, including reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals. This is a hands-on program presented by Naturalist Endeavors. Learn about the animals’ habitats, what they like to eat and what likes to eat them. There will be an animal expert on hand to teach about the animals and to answer audience questions. For information, call 734-426-4477.

 Cost: Free

  • TRY HOCKEY FOR FREE

Where/when: Saturday at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube, 2121 Oak Valley Dr. Boys skate from noon-1 p.m., and girls skate from 1-2 p.m.

Why go: This is a great opportunity for children ages 5 to 12 to try hockey before making a commitment. Loaner equipment will be available, or participants are welcome to bring their own. Coaches will be on hand so parents can learn about all of the beginner programs available at the Ice Cube. New skaters are welcome. Registration is required. Call 734-213-1600 for more information.

Cost:  $30 (one adult, one child). Each additional child costs $5.

  • FAMILY MOVIE AND POPCORN DAY 

Where/when: The will screen a movie and provide free popcorn at 11 a.m. Monday.

Why go: No school on Monday, so pack up the family and enjoy a morning at the movies. The library will show Nanny McPhee Returns, rated PG. Call the library if you have questions at 734-426-4477.

Cost:  Free

  • ‘ARTVENTURES' ONE-DAY CAMP

Where/when: The camp will take place at the from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday.

Why go: The children don’t have school, and what better way to spend the day than creating beautiful art? The theme for the day is neighborhoods. The students will study Romare Bearden and create collages inspired by his work.  They will also make masks out of "found" objects. For more information, contact the DAC at 734-726-0322 or visit dexterartscenter.org.

Cost: $75. All materials are included, but students are asked to bring in collage materials such as old photographs, magazines, sheet music, can labels, maps, fabric scraps, etc. Students should also bring a bag lunch.
