St. Andrew's Church Plans Special Veterans Day Service

Military families will be recognized during Sunday's 10 a.m. service at the church.

in Dexter will honor current and former members of the military at a special Veterans Day service on Sunday.

Military members and their families will be recognized during a color guard presentation by Girl Scout Troop 40513. Patriotic hymns such as "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" will be sung, along with each hymn for the branches of the military — Air Force, Coast Guard, Navy, Marines and Army.

"We have many members of our congregation who are veterans of the Korean War and some from World War II," Rev. Larry VanSlambrook said.

At the close of the ceremony, "Taps" will be played to honor veterans who have died in the past year.

The service will take place at 10 a.m. followed by a reception in the church's Fellowship Hall open to the public.

  • Dexter Chorus Concert

Veterans will be honored on Thursday, as the sixth- through 12th-grade choirs at Dexter Community Schools present their Veterans Day concert at 7 p.m. at the . The students will sing an assortment of patriotic and inspirational songs in tribute to the veterans in the community. The concert is free and open to the public.

Come to the Veterans Memorial Park in Chelsea (corner of M-52 and Sibley Road), for a Veterans Day celebration on Friday. A dedication and ceremony are planned. Col. James Coolican, Mayor Jason Lindauer, and area veterans will be present for the dedication of a memorial bench and tribute to the fallen soldiers.

At 12:30 p.m. veterans, family and friends will head to the Comfort Inn to share stories and view a screening of Chelsea District Library's World War II documentary. Refreshments will be served. The event is free and open to the public.
