St. Joseph Parish's 'Festival on the Corner' Returns on July 15

The festival will feature music, comedy shows and entertainment for teens and adults in Dexter.

Residents of all ages will get a hilarious dose of Christianity on July 15 as the comedic stand-up show Late Night Catechism returns to the annual St. Joseph Parish Festival.

The show will mark its third year at the festival and features actors performing part catechism class, part stand-up routine in an interactive comedy on the parish grounds. This year, couples will participate in a version of “The Newly Wed Game” and learn about the sacraments of marriage and last rites.

“It’s Loretta Young meets Carol Burnett,” festival co-chairman Mike Vickers said “so bring your better half and a good sense of humor to see the funniest counselor around.”

Late Night Catechism is just one of the many activities planned for this year’s festival, Vickers said.

On July 15, the teen café will feature "all you can eat" pizza bar, inflatable games, Rock Band competitions, door prizes and more for $5. The café is open from 6-10 p.m. for teens ages 13 and up. Other activities include a Bingo and Las Vegas tent for adults and performances by The Sun Messangers, Gemini and Toppermost, a Beatles tribute band, on Saturday.

“The entertainment committee tried to hit everyone – almost all the entertainment is geared toward all ages,” festival co-chairman Joe Veltri said. “(Toppermost) is a really talented group of guys. They dress and sound like the Beatles. It should be fun.”

Throughout the weekend, tickets will be on sale for the parish's grand prize $5,000 raffle. Proceeds from food and raffle sales will be put toward the church expenses.

“Out of whatever our profit is, we donate 10 percent to local charities in the Dexter and Chelsea area and all around Washtenaw County,” Veltri said.

Entry to the festival is free and tickets to the Late Night Catechism program are $25. Food will be available for purchase.

“We’ll have plenty of food:pizza, pulled pork, burgers and Italian sausage and kielbasa,” Veltri said. “And on Saturday, the Knights of Columbus will host their chicken broil.”

The festival opens with Late Night Catechism 3: Til Death Do Us Part at 7:30 p.m. on July 15. The festival runs from noon-11 p.m. July 16 and from noon-6 p.m. on July 17 on the festival grounds, 6805 Mast Rd. in Dexter.

“You don’t have to go very far to have a lot of fun for a few hours. It’s a good time for the whole family," Veltri said.
