Summer Camp Registration is Underway

Several summer camps around Dexter are currently registering youth.

With the choice and variety of summer camps available in southeastern Michigan, boredom won't be an option this summer for your kids. A lot of organizations, from the YMCA to your local parks and recreation department offer dozens of choices for camps, with science, reading, sports, music and more among them. Whether you're looking for an all-around experience or a camp more focused on a particular interest, this list features a few in your town or one very close by. Feel free to add your own, as well:

Location: Dexter
Name: Dexter Arts Center Summer Camp
Type of camp: Mosaic art
Cost: $130.50 for members and $145 for non-members
Where:
When: June 20-25, 1 to 3 p.m.
Deadline for registration: None
Details: Students will work on a Terra cotta pot. Students will learn how to desgn a 3-D base. Students will learn how to cut, grind glass and grout as well. This project makes a cute gift for someone or children can start their own plant during the warm weather.

Name: Dexter Arts Center Summer Camp
Type of camp: Songwriting
Cost: $157.50 for members or $175 for non-members

When: Aug.15-19, 5 to 7 p.m.

Details: This camp is open to ages 12 and up. Are you a songwriter? Have you always wanted to be one? Students will begin by answering this question: "What is the most pressing issue in your community today?" This starts our journey to the song. The group will write, collaboratively, with the help of a local songwriter/community advocate to produce a positive song. Teachers will guide youth through the songwriting, performing and recording processes using a variety of teaching skills and multi-media examples.

Name: Dexter Arts Center Summer Camp
Type of camp: Music production and recording
Cost: $157.50 for members or $175 for non-members

When: Aug.22-26, 5 to 7 p.m.

Details: This camp is open to ages 12 and up. The more technical aspect to songwriting, this camp will approach the actual recording of songs. Students learn how to record their own music with resources readily available today. Basic recording techniques are presented and workshop participants get to try their hand at recording on the spot.

Name: Dexter Community Education Summer Camps
Type of camp: Camps range from sports to film production, video game design and dancing.
Cost: Cost varies by program. Visit the website for more information.
Where: Dexter Community Schools.
When: June thru August
Deadline for registration: Ongoing but registration is filling up fast.
Details: Workshops include video game design, horse riding, basketball, tennis, videography, karate, ballet, fitness, voice training, etc.

Name: Chelsea Center for the Arts Summer Camps
Type of camp: Music and visual arts
Cost: $115 half-day or $225 full-day for five days; $95 half-day or $185 full-day for four days.

Details: Camp Invention is a weeklong adventure in science creativity. Led by qualified educators, this exciting program is being hosted by Wylie Elementary this summer for children entering grades one through six. The Camp Invention program is a unique opportunity for your child to experience hands-on learning.

Name: Girl Scout Day Camp
Type of camp: Outdoor activities

Where: Camp Crawford, Milan. Transportation to and from camp is available at the Ann Arbor Regional Center of Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan, 1900 Manchester Rd., Ann Arbor.
When: Varies, different one week sessions throughout summer, starting June 20

Name: Rocks and Robots Camp
Type of camp: Outdoor activities and science
Cost: From $239 for half day sessions up to $579 for full day sessions.
Where: Honey Creek Community School, 1735 S. Wagner Rd., Ann Arbor
When: Varies, different one week sessions throughout summer, starting June 20
Deadline for registration: None, but sessions are filling up quick.
Details: This unique camp combines working with and building robots with rock climbing and other physical outdoor activities. Ages accepted range from 6 to 15.

Name: Mostly Music Camp

Where: Grace Bible Church, 1300 S. Maple, Ann Arbor
When: Aug. 8-12
Deadline for registration: Registration available until camp is full.
Details: The Ann Arbor Area Piano Teachers Guild sponsors this creative camp that lets kids both explore and play different types of music and instruments. There are two different camps, one for kids grades 1-7 and a younger group for pre-K kids.

Name: iD Tech Camps
Type of camp: Technology, computers

Where: University of Michigan
When: Varies, different sessions throughout the summer

Details: iD Tech Camps is a national program offering a wide variety of computer and technology-related camps, ranging from game design to film production. The University of Michigan location features both day and overnight camps.

Location: Brighton
Name: Midcourse Correction
Type of camp: For at-risk youth
Cost: $425
Where: Actual camp is located at 10359 East Farrand, Otisville, MI 48463 (North of Flint). Offices are in Brighton.
When: Varies, there are multiple weekend-long sessions throughout the summer.
Deadline for registration: Registration available up to the Thursday before each weekend camp.

Cost: Varies per camp and on member status with Liberty Athletic

Details: The Ann Arbor-based club provides half and full day camps filled with arts and crafts, rock climbing, outdoor games and even a little Kung Fu training.

Details: Wild Swan Theater is home to Camp DoYaWanna, with theater games and improv for activities and themes ranging from “Under the Sea” to “African Arts.”
