Registration involves filling out a reading record form and setting a reading goal. The reading goal can be a certain number of books read during the summer or an amount of time spent reading each week. Children who cannot read yet may participate with a parent or caregiver by signing up for the “Read-To-Me” program.

Reading records will be kept at the library so children can keep track of their progress. Each week, a small prize is given to every child who comes into the library to record the books he or she has read. Children who meet their reading goal by Aug. 14 will receive a book bag full of treats and will be entered in the grand prize drawing Aug. 15.

This year’s teen program, “You Are Here,” also begins Friday. Teens will be asked to read three hours or more per week to receive the weekly prize or to enter the weekly prize drawing. Reading more than three hours a week for all seven weeks will earn teens a book bag full of surprises and an entry into the grand prize drawing Aug. 15.

For adults, the library will offer the summer reading program “Novel Destinations.” Adults may register for the program during the kick-off event, “Around the World with the Jackson Family,” at 7 p.m. Friday or any time throughout the summer.

Participants will receive a "Novel Destination" photo album, reading log, pen and review sheets. The program lasts seven weeks with a different continent featured each week. Reading books or articles related to the continent and writing reviews will earn entries into the weekly drawings. Adults who complete the program will also be entered into the grand prize drawing Aug. 15.

In addition to the Summer Reading Program, the library will offer events and activities throughout the summer for all ages, including special performances, movies, crafts, educational presentations, games and contests.  A list of all events can be found online at dexter.lib.mi.us.
