Video: Dexter Residents Survey Tornado Damage

Subdivision hit hard by Thursday's tornado, but some are thankful damage wasn't worse.

Residents in a Wilson Street subdivision in Dexter surveyed damage Friday from a tornado that struck early Thursday evening.

Damage to the neighborhood's homes ranged from mild roof and siding damage to houses that either were completely leveled by the storm or torn apart, leaving residents without a home.

John Roberts, a college student at the University of Toledo, was in class when the tornado struck. When he came home, an entire wall of his garage on View Drive was missing.

Roberts said he was fortunate the damage mostly affected just the one wall of the garage and some of the house's siding.

He said he was worried when he couldn't get in touch with his mother and stepfather who live at the home and left class to check on his family.

"At that point I was just completely stressed out because I couldn't get ahold of them," he said. "I finally get home and I see them having a beer out front and I figured it couldn't be too bad."

He credited his neighbors for coming together to help those whose homes sustained heavy damage.

"It's nice to see how well the community's come together for this," he said.

When he arrived home, he said, it was too dark to realize the severity of the damage.

"I did see one house on my way in just completely gone," he said. "There were times a little bit of emotions got involved just seeing the sheer damage. There's some people here I grew up with. Just seeing bad things happen to them like this, it's not fun."
