Weekend Planner: Dexter Area Events for July 20-22

Here's a look at some fun family-friendly activities in the area to beat the heat this weekend.

From art fairs to dinosaurs, Dexter Patch has compiled a list of family-friendly activities to enjoy around the area this weekend.

Kids

  • Stories with La'Ron Williams

La'Ron Williams is a nationally acclaimed, award-winning storyteller who has toured extensively presenting programs and workshops. This music-spiced, highly participatory performance presents a dynamic blend of original and traditional tales crafted to encourage community, foster cooperation and promote peaceful conflict resolution. This program takes place at the on Friday at 11 a.m.

  • Teen graffiti art challenge

Teens who participate will create graffiti art using spray paint on canvas that will be judged by peer teenagers and adults. Spray paint supplies, canvases and easels will be supplied by the Ann Arbor District Library. The top three winners will receive gift certificates for art supplies in the amounts of $75, $50 and $25.

  • Free Dinosaur Tours

Join museum staff on a free 30-minute tour of dinosaur country in this interactive exhibit at the University of Michigan Exhibit Museum of Natural History, 2 p.m. Saturday.

  • Catch a movie

  • 59th annual Manchester Chicken Broil

Dinner includes half a chicken, dinner roll, homemade coleslaw, radishes, potato chips, and a beverage. Ice cream and pop available. Tickets are $8 in advance at Coffee Mill Cafe, Whistle Stop restaurant, Manchester Market, Manchester Pharmacy, Ann Arbor Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, TCF Bank in Saline & Chelsea, and other locations listed at manchesterchickenbroil.org; $9 at the gate. The dinner takes place Thursday from 4-8 p.m.

The annual parish festival takes place on Saturday and Sunday. Events include a classic car show, 5K Chase and Race around the Steeple, kids games with inflatable's, craft sales, children's entertainment, a variety of food, and 50/50 raffles. For more information, call 734-426-8483.

  • Ann Arbor Art Fair

The Ann Arbor Art Fair will be held through Saturday. Artists have been selected by an independent jury, consisting of professional artists, professors and gallery owners. The fair will feature a wide variety of art media, including 2D and 3D-mixed media, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, ceramics, fiber, glass, jewelry and works in metal, stone and wood. The fair is open to the public on Friday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, visit www.TheAnnArborArtFair.com.

 

  • Chelsea Area Players presents: CAPtivating Rhythms - a 40th anniversary revu

The Chelsea Area Players will celebrate their 40th anniversary on July 20 and 21 at 7 p.m., and July 22 at 3 p.m. at the Washington Street Education Center's Prinzing Auditorium, 500 Washington St. Musical numbers from The Sound of Music to Seussical, will be performed.
