Pumpkins will soar through the sky at the 5th Annual Pumpkin Launch on Saturday, Oct. 6 hosted by Oakland County Parks and Recreation and the Village of Lake Orion.

“This event is a competition to see which team can launch pumpkins the longest distance and which team is the most accurate pumpkin launcher. It’s a great event for budding trebuchet engineers and spectators to attend. Spectators can talk to participants and learn techniques on how to build their own launchers,” Pumpkin Launch Founder and Lake Orion Village Council Member Michael Toth said.

Event participants compete with home-built trebuchets and are divided into two divisions, Open and High School (for participants ages 18 and under). Prizes and trophies are awarded to the longest measured pumpkin launch and the most accurate launch. Free pumpkins are provided to participants and spectators, while supplies last.

The event runs from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. and includes raffles, contests, and limited bleacher seating. Spectators may bring portable chairs.

Entry fee to participate is $25/team. Call Mike Toth at 248-961-3362 for details.

Food items are available for purchase, benefitting Boy Scouts Troop 108. The event is sponsored by Waste Management, Cranbrook Institute of Science, Sagebrush Cantina in Lake Orion and Ray C’s in Lapeer.

Orion Oaks County Park is located at 2301 Clarkston Road, between Baldwin and Joslyn Roads in Orion Township. A valid daily pass or Oakland County Parks annual vehicle permit is required for park entry and can be purchased on the day of the event.
