St.James Episcopal Church in Dexter will celebrate Mardi Gras this year, New Orleans style complete with a jazz trioand lots of good food. Stephen Rush, jazz professor at U of M school of music, Andrew Bishop, also on the faculty at U of M, will celebrate Mardi Gras in true musical style with lots of up-beat tunes to sing and move to: if you are so inspired! The program will include New Orleans-tinged jazz, modern and old, with a touch of hymns to boot - Mardi Gras style!Running the gamut from Louis Armstrong, Ellington and Sidney Bechet - all the way to Ornette Coleman and Albert Ayler, this group makes "art music" as entertaining as it is enlightening. Having performed at the ARK, the DIA, and touring throughout the midwest and NYC, the group has a collective recorded output of over 50 CD's, ranging from orchestra music, chamber jazz, and electronic experimental "art-music".
