Superhero 5k for Girls on the Run of SE Michigan's scholarship fund

Calling all Superheroes!  Girls on the Run of Southeastern Michigan, a local non-profit program that promotes self-respect and healthy lifestyles to preteen girls, is hosting an inaugural scholarship fundraising event, the Superhero 5k!  This morning of SUPER fun for the whole family will take place Saturday, November 2nd at Hudson Mills Metropark in Dexter.

The event includes a 1 mile and 5k run/walk along the park’s trails and a kids’ dash for children ages seven and younger.  The 1 mile and 5k are timed events, but all are invited to go their happy pace.  Participants are encouraged to dress as their favorite Superhero, and prizes will be awarded for both speed and costume creativity.

“Our annual Girls on the Run 5k is such a wonderful celebration of the girls in our community.  The Superhero 5K will share the same spirit of fun through running and show that everyone in our community can be a Superhero!” said Kelley Kozloff, 5k Event Coordinator for Girls on the Run of Southeastern Michigan.

Girls on the Run of Southeastern Michigan supports two Girls on the Run sites in Dexter: Wylie Elementary and Creekside Intermediate.  Over 100 girls participated on Girls on the Run teams at these schools in the 2012-2013 school year.  "At Girls on the Run, I learned that no matter how tough something is, I can always push through it," stated Olivia Sands, a participant on the Girls on the Run team at Creekside Intermediate last spring.

All proceeds from the Superhero 5k benefit the scholarship fund for Girls on the Run of Southeastern Michigan, which aims to make their program accessible to all girls in the community, regardless of their family’s ability to pay the program registration fee.

“Almost ninety percent of our program sites are hosted at title one schools that serve under-resourced, low-income communities. In 2008 less than 50 families requested financial assistance. Last year we provided scholarships to 596 girls. That is quite a leap however we are extremely proud that since being founded in 2001 we have never turned a family away. The proceeds from this event will help even more girls in our community have the opportunity to experience our life changing program.” said Danielle Plunkett, Executive Director of Girls on the Run of Southeastern Michigan.
