Dexter Garden Club's 2013 Calendar: Plant Sale (May 18th) & Garden Walk (June 15th)

Mark your calendar for the Dexter Garden Club's Plant Sale (May 18th) and Garden Walk (June 15th)

We are proud to announce that 2013 marks the Dexter Garden Club’s 20th anniversary as a community organization.   To earmark this anniversary year, the Club has organized a Garden Walk of spectacular gardens in and around Dexter on June 15th in addition to our annual Plant Sale, which will occur on May 18th.  We are hoping for vigorous attendance at both of these events.

Proceeds from both events will encompass the fundraising for the Club for this year.  The Club’s budget covers operations, speaker fees, civic donations and horticultural scholarships/grants as well as supporting Club projects in the Village.  Projects include gardening activities in support of the Clock Tower, the Dexter Senior Center, Gordon Hall, the Dexter Area Historical Society & Museum and the Green Thumb Project at Generations Together.

This year’s Plant Sale will be held on Saturday, May 18th are from 9 am to 2 pm at the gazebo in Monument Park.  The 2013 Plant Sale is sponsored generously by Cindy Strang – our State Farm Insurance Agent in Dexter.

Much of the plant material sold originates from our members’ gardens – freshly repotted for the sale.  To ensure our plants are top quality, an inspection from the Michigan Department of Agriculture is completed to ensure product is disease and pest free.  To facilitate purchases at the sale, plants will be organized on tables and grouped into categories of sun perennials, shade perennials, edibles, woody and evergreen ornamentals, indigenous Michigan species and specialty plants.  Club members and Master Gardeners will be on hand to advise on appropriate choices of plants for individual situations and to answer any questions.

Also participating in this year’s event are Generations Together and the Dexter Senior Center.  This year look for the gorgeous, colorful geraniums grown by club members for the Generations Together a daycare center located on Baker Road to fund a new playground set for the children.  Another addition to the sale this year will include the Dexter Senior Center members selling their delicious salted pretzels, muffins and coffee.  Proceeds from these sales go directly to Generations Together and the Dexter Senior Center.

At this year’s Plant Sale will be an educational talk at 10 am.  The topic will be "How to Best Incorporate Perennials in Your Garden."  There will also be two drawings held to giving away two ornamental trees this year.  Tickets for the tree drawing will be given automatically at the point of sale.  The drawing for the trees will be completed at the Dexter Mill.

We are also pleased to announce that the Michigan Dahlia Association will be hosting their 2013 plant sale event at the Dexter Mill on the same date (May 18th) from 10 am to 2 pm.  A selection of named dahlia varieties will be available.   We encourage people to take the opportunity to check out the available plant selection at both events.

Dexter Garden Walk June 15th

The Dexter Garden Club has organized a Garden Walk of inspirational gardens in and around Dexter for Saturday, June 15th.  Tickets are $10 per person.  The event runs from 10 am to 4 pm.

The public is invited to tour some of the finest gardens in Dexter and surrounding townships.   Included in the tour are 7 private residences and the recently completed Mill Creek Park in downtown Dexter.  Each location will be staffed by Garden Club members and volunteers to help guide and answer any questions.  Our previous Garden Walk was held in 2010.
