4 Dexter Health Interventions Awarded Grants

The Chelsea-Area Wellness Foundation recently awarded more than $90,000 in grants.

The Chelsea-Area Wellness Foundation recently announced that it awarded more than $90,000 in grants to 12 area health interventions, including four in Dexter.

The foundation awarded $93,379 in grants on Aug. 21 to interventions previously approved as part of the 5 Healthy Towns Project, according to a press release from the Chelsea-Area Wellness Foundation.

The Chelsea-Area Wellness Foundation, a tax-exempt private foundation governed by a volunteer board of directors, grants funds for projects dedicated to creating a culture of wellness and sustainable improvements in health.

Notable grant awards include $15,500 to Unadilla Township for a Playground Playscape at Unadilla Township Park, $18,500 for the Manchester Voices Coordinator and $2,882 for improvements to the Dexter Farmers Market.

Dexter

• 5H Community Read ($3,200) – A collaborative program with libraries in Chelsea, Dexter, Manchester, Grass Lake and Stockbridge.  The Community Read raises community awareness by creating a space for community dialogue about wellness.  This year’s topic is Move More. www.5hcommunityread.wordpress.com.

• Dexter Farmers Market Enhancements ($2,882) – This intervention increases access to healthy foods by fostering growth of the Dexter Farmers Market, including promotional materials, a phone line for an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) machine and permanent signage. www.dextermi.gov/farmers-market

• What’s For Dinner Healthy Shopping ($2,492) – Assists Busch’s Grocery in Dexter to provide, identify, and promote healthy food options. www.buschswholesomeideas.blogspot.com

• Bike Rack Installation ($1,750) – Purchase and install 6 bike hoops in three locations at Village of Dexter Parks. www.dextermi.gov

Manchester

• Manchester Voices Coordinator ($18,500) – a coordinator for Manchester Voices, which targets youth ages 11-17 within the Manchester community.  Voices seeks to reduce instances of youth drug and alcohol use.

• Manchester Safe Routes to School ($14,000) – the grant provides for a part time Safe Routes to School Coordinator, activities and materials to encourage students to walk, ride their bikes or roll to school, and a contract with Michigan State University to develop a SR2S action plan. www.saferoutesmichigan.org

• Manchester Healthy Chefs ($13,000) – Students meet once a week for 10 weeks in the fall and 10 weeks in the winter spring to cook.  Instructor plans the menu and purchases food and students prepare the food, taste and take food home to families. Last year’s Healthy Chefs finished second at Michigan State University’s Junior Chef Cook-off Competition.

• Manchester Project Success ($5,000) – designed to prevent and reduce substance abuse among students from 12-18 years of age drug and alcohol use.  Strategies include school-wide activities, parent education and awareness, individual and group support and education series.

Stockbridge

• Unadilla Park Playscape ($15,500) – This intervention is part of a larger collaboration to improve Unadilla Park by installing a playscape and swing set at The Unadilla Township Community Park.  A pathway around the perimeter of the park was constructed last year to furnish a place to walk, run and bike. twp.unadilla.mi.us

• Stockbridge Wellness Center Expansion ($12,815) – expanded hours and classes, as well as additional cardio equipment to increase opportunities for residents to become SWC members. www.Stockbridgewellness.org

• Community Pathway Signage ($2,240) -  the intervention will provide a unifying Logo, “wayfinding” signage, and 6 strategically placed laminated and mounted maps.
