Dexter Mens Water Polo Season 2013

Dexter Men’s Water Polo celebrated the 2013 season at their banquet.

The Varsity team, coached by Brian Semple, had a re-building year following the loss of a large bulk of graduating seniors. This season’s Varsity team was short of returning seniors and only included one junior.

Led by captains seniors Guy Burke, Jack Donevan, and Andrew Watson (goal-keeper), the team was made up by seniors Aaron Kelly, Max Korinek, exchange students Chema Calleja (Spain) and Dominik Sinram (Germany), junior Derek Melinsky, sophomores Matt Bergdolt, David Merz, and Ryan Stanton.

The JV team, coached by Andrew Lenonard, was led by sophmores Ethan Reynolds, Ian Russell, Chris Seidleck, Adam Theros and Alex West (goal keeper) and benefitted by a large influx and freshmen players-Will Blodgett, Elijah Cook, Ben Daugherty, Mitchell Houghtaling, Alex Janosi, Kevin Kimmel, and Sam Latshaw.

Tournaments gave both teams a chance to gain valuable experience and to practice the game with a wide range of opponents.

Dexter hosted the JV tournament in September at which the Dexter JV team came out the victors with 4 straight wins.

This year’s district teams (AA pioneer, AA Huron and Chelsea) gave tough competition, both Varsity and JV fought hard to be seeded third in the District.

Coach Semple said,

“As a coach I was happy to see how our team came together, in a season with many unknowns, players rose to the challenge.

“Although our season ended at the district tournament, I know how much this season will help our team looking towards the future.

“Our seniors did a great job of not only challenging younger players, but encouraging them every step of the way.  With a team as young as ours, it was important for the older players to lead by example, and they did exactly that.”

Winning Varsity Awards for the first time were:

Daugherty, Janosi, Russell, Theros, and West.
