Letter to the Editor: Jim Drolett, Libby Brushaber Right Choice for Dexter Township

Dexter Township resident says the township is in great need of new leadership.

Dear Editor:

As a Dexter Township resident, I feel the township is in great need of new leadership. That is why I’m asking you to vote for Jim Drolett for township supervisor and Libby Brushaber for township treasurer.

Libby Brushaber has served local government for decades. Libby is currently a Dexter Township trustee and recently retired as managing director of Multi-Lakes Sewer Authority.

Libby has also served on the Dexter Township Planning Commission and Dexter Area Fire Authority Board. Libby is a long-time resident and brings a lot of experience to the position of township treasurer, which I believe is extremely important in handling the tax dollars we entrust to Dexter Township.

Dana Bullen has lived in Dexter Township less than one year and she has no experience in local government. In addition, Dana has a full-time job, so she may not generally be available during business hours.

I also, support Jim Drolett for Dexter Township supervisor. I have worked in the Dexter Township office for 12 years and I have seen first hand how things work and don’t work. I have already announced that I’m retiring on Nov. 20, 2012, so I have nothing to gain by taking a position, other than being very concerned for the direction of Dexter Township leadership. That is why I support Jim Drolett.

I have known Jim for many years. Jim will restore openness and transparency to the supervisor’s office. In addition to his decades of experience in local government, Jim has the characteristics I’m looking for in an elected official.

  • Jim is someone you can trust to give you all the facts, not just the ones that support his position.
  • Jim is always fair in dealing with people – public and employees alike.
  • Jim is genuine – he won’t smile and say one thing to your face, but something different behind your back.
  • Jim is a team player, not a “one man show."
  • Jim is a “uniter," not a “divider."
  • Jim’s character is what I expect in township leadership.

If I planned on moving out of Dexter Township in the near future, I would not be writing this, but I plan on living here for the rest of my life, so fair, honest, experienced township leadership is important to me.

For more information about Jim Drolett, please check his website:

Harley, your comments about township appointments are misleading and/or inaccurate. The Township Board of Trustees--not the Supervisor--votes to appoint or approve the appointment of each and every person that sits on a township board, committee, or commission. The only required township appointments that are made without benefit of a vote by the Board of Trustees is that of Deputy Clerk, whom you appoint, and Deputy Treasurer, who Vickie K. appoints. If Supervisor Kelly has hand selected cronies to serve, it has been with the agreement of a majority of the Board of Trustees. It would be interesting to know if you voted differently than Ms. Kelly. Mary Lou, that is a great website! Thanks for that!
Don Quixote November 05, 2012 at 06:37 PM
Rather I meant the associations website...
Harley B. Rider November 05, 2012 at 06:43 PM
Ms. Charles, you are absolutely correct that all appointments, except the statutory deputies and election assistants, must be approved by the Board. If you check our minutes you will find that I voted to approve most appointments that Pat brought to the Board (most were unanimous), and by-and-large those who were appointed have done their jobs well. Also, any Board member can offer an appointment for any open position. My point was that many of those appointed have had personal connections with the person offering the appointment. It has been rare that an appointee has come forward without SOME connection to a Board member, and that Board member has often been the Supervisor. A recent exception was when we appointed Steve Feinman to the Township Board to fill a vacant Trustee position. Township Government is not unlike many other organizations in that regard, which perpetuates the appearance of the "good old boy" network. Then again, there are very few people who are willing to give their time to local governmental positions, which, at the local level, are generally under-compensated and under-appreciated. A lack of interest is also shown by the fact that it is very rare that more than one or two people actually attend the monthly Township Board meeting. After the many comments on this forum, I would hope that we see more people at our meetings - the third Tuesday every month at 7PM. Harley B. Rider, Dexter Township Clerk

I would like to note that under Pat (and the rest of the board) have reduced long term debt, increased the general fund, and has proven to be a responsible official even through times of decreasing taxable values... I was just impressed by the overall performance of the entire board over the past four + years. Not weighing in on Jim or anyone else... Just data...
Don Quixote November 05, 2012 at 07:57 PM
to clarify: "financial performance"

In Mr. Rider's response here, he states "[he] voted to approve most appointments that Pat brought to the Board", and "Township Government...perpetuates the appearance of the good-old-boy network". Here, Harley is acknowledging his participation in that network. Question for Mr. Rider - How many appointees did other Board members bring to the Board for consideration? You can't complain about the situation if you don't try to bring forward solutions yourself.
Roger McDonough November 06, 2012 at 12:21 AM
I find it interesting that Mr. Rider says that he wants people to "wait until after [Nov 6]" to contact him regarding obtaining public records. Here he implies that he is too busy with the election to perform his job, but he is apparently not too busy to blog most of the morning while at the Township office.

Ive been a big fan of you Harley, but your comments and lack of maturity and respect on here has left me frustrated. Maybe since your running unopposed, we can now see your true colors....Tacky.
Don Quixote November 06, 2012 at 01:06 AM
Mr. Rider In response to Roger, would you not consider appointing your wife as your deputy also "perpetuating the good ol' boy" persona?

Good point! Hey Harley, Quit wasting taxpayer money blogging on the clock!
Marilyn Wilkie November 06, 2012 at 01:46 AM
Wow, I just stumbled on this whole sordid thread. I'm not sure if it opened my eyes or made me want to look away from the whole mess. I have respected Harley since he was a law enforcement officer years ago. I guess I don't have a horse in this race. But I do know I despise the way our American elections have sunken into a cesspool of nastiness.
Don Quixote November 06, 2012 at 01:50 AM
That's already been sorted and Mr. Utsler was not the one behind this.

If you want to be childish and insulting, why don't you put on your big boy pants and do it under your own name? Or at least under a name that shows up here more than just the last two days? You, "Timothy Roberts", "Don Quixote" and "Roger "McDonugh" just showed up these last days and only have ever commented on this thread topic. None of the apparently real names show up in the tax records for the township or directory either. I don't mind people having differing opinion's but you all seem very suspiciously the same person and the nasty tone is really over the top - disagree with a point but the personal attacks on Harley Rider are uncalled for. He is the ONLY TOWNSHIP OFFICIAL TAKING THE TIME TO COMMENT HERE. And unlike you, he has the backbone to do it under his own name. So why don't you try acting mature? I am really sick of your rude tone which is so easy to do when you are unwilling to use your real name and stand up for what you are saying. You and people like you are a HUGE part of what is wrong with politics today.
Laura Jones November 06, 2012 at 02:45 AM
I most certainly am registered to vote in Dexter Township and have been doing so regularly. Feel free to introduce yourself tomorrow morning when I go to vote. You can also see that I am a resident of Dexter Township by my tax records. Nor is there any one with the same name registered to vote, paying taxes or residing in Scio or Webster township, unless you want to go after my parents, which I don't suggest. I am so very concerned I am willing to comment under my real name, which also makes it clear where I live. Nice try, well, not really.
Laura Jones November 06, 2012 at 03:04 AM
I don't really care - who ever you are. Seriously. I live in the lakes district. My husband Steve and I have lived her quite some time, and unlike you, I do not feel the need to throw barbs from the safety of an anonymous perch behind my computer. I do comment, have for some time, again, unlike you. I happen to care very much about where I live and the people in my community. I do so openly and obviously. Try it sometime.
Don Quixote November 06, 2012 at 03:09 AM
You mentioned how childish and insulting everyone is being... That's why I am not using my real name. Anyways I'll see you at the polls. Look for a Spanish man in armor with a handle-bar mustachio!
Laura Jones November 06, 2012 at 03:31 AM
Sorry if I was unclear. I didn't mean everyone was being rude, really just you from the list I cited.
Don Quixote November 06, 2012 at 03:35 AM
Rude? You never expect the Spanish inquisition!
Don Quixote November 06, 2012 at 03:37 AM
And more seriously, Id point out that on that list, you only call out the "fake" people that tend to have differing views to your own. Other than that I apologize for the insinuation that you are not registered to vote, I shall rescind and delete them with honor! I was wrong.
Laura Jones November 06, 2012 at 03:50 AM
No, there were plenty of people here a disagreed with, but only some who were rude and hiding behind pseudonyms.
Concerned Citizen November 06, 2012 at 03:55 AM
I hope to see you all tomorrow voting - if you are looking for me - look for the lady that looks like Gisele Bundchen - not pregnant - LOL. My biggest wish is that we all come together to make sure the best is being done for the citizens of Dexter Township!
Don Quixote November 06, 2012 at 04:11 AM
okay
Donna Low November 06, 2012 at 12:05 PM
Election polls are now open....go out and VOTE!
Marilyn Wilkie November 06, 2012 at 02:02 PM
I have no idea who that person is, and I won't be looking for her.
Concerned Citizen November 06, 2012 at 02:08 PM
Ms. Wilkie - it was meant as a joke to hopefully lighten up the conversation - Gisele is a beautiful model. Have a great day!
Marilyn Wilkie November 06, 2012 at 02:13 PM
That makes your comment even sillier...comparing yourself to "a beautiful model". If you used your real name on here perhaps people could decide that for themselves.
Roger McDonough November 06, 2012 at 02:46 PM
Response to Lake Girl's comment posted at 8:13 pm on November 3: 12-3-22 is a valid date if you interpret it in YY-MM-DD format. Then it becomes March 22, 2012.
