Bicyclist Killed in Accident Near North Territorial and Dexter-Pinckney Road in Dexter Township

A 53-year-old woman was killed while riding her bike in Dexter Township on Tuesday.

The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office has confirmed a 53-year-old bicyclist was killed in an accident near the intersection of North Territorial and Dexter-Pinckney roads in Dexter Township on Tuesday.

According to Derrick Jackson, community engagement director, a female cyclist was struck by a 2002 Mercury Sable driven by a male resident from Chelsea traveling westbound on North Territorial Road around 6:05 p.m.

"By all accounts, the woman was an experienced bicyclist, wore a helmet and was following all the proper safety precautions," Jackson said. "From what we know at this point, she stopped off on the side of the road near ."

At some point the woman stopped to rest in the ditch on the northwest corner of the intersection, re-entered the roadway on North Territorial Road against traffic in order to head southbound on Dexter-Pinckney Road when she was struck by the vehicle.

The name of the victim is being withheld until deputies can contact her family, Jackson said.

"Obviously we need to investigate this further, but it appears that the driver saw the victim at the last minute and tried to stop," Jackson said.

A Nixle alert sent around 6:50 p.m. advised motorists to avoid the intersection, north of Dexter, for several hours as the intersection was closed and traffic was being detoured.
