Dexter Area Fire Department Performs Ice Rescue on Portage Lake

The fire department was dispatched to Dexter Township on Sunday after a vehicle crashed through the ice on Portage Lake.

Dexter Area Fire Department firefighters participated in an ice rescue Sunday afternoon after a 24-year-old woman called for help on Portage Lake in Dexter Township.

According to Lt. Tim Burke, the driver was "not paying attention to her surroundings" and ended up roughly 400 feet in the middle of Portage Lake. Burke said firefighters and the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Dive Team responded to an emergency call around 2:30 p.m., when the woman's Monte Carlo broke partially through the ice.

"It didn’t take long for us to get out there," Burke said. "We had three guys with water suits perform a rope rescue within 15 minutes."

Burke said the woman was disoriented but was not injured.

"We're not sure why she had her car out on the lake," he said. "She wasn't making sense when we spoke with her."

Firefighters had the vehicle towed from the lake. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

Posted this afternoon on Annarbor.com.... "CONCERNED CITIZEN 1:05 PM on 2/19/2013 My daughter lives on Mc Gregor Lane, this driver obliterated her dock, that had been removed for the winter and was on shore. She also drove over several steel poles that are permanently in the water. There is no way that any sober, intellegent person could do what she did and not be aware of it. Even if you thought driving off the road through a yard could happen, how could you not notice a 5 foot stack of dock sections? I think this young woman realized the damage she had done and thought she would drive away as quickly as possible before someon spotted her! It is either this scenario or she needs her license taken away immediately. I sure hope she was ticketed!"

We need to be more concerned about theft and speeding in the area. Like police mobile speed signs stolen, private road signs stolen, Allan Drive, and numerous other personal thefts.
