A baby abandoned on the porch of a Port Huron house is hospitalized and doing well as police search for information about the newborn’s mother.
A neighbor in the 1200 block of 11th Street discovered the infant around 4:30 a.m. Sunday, The Times Herald reports. The woman’s dog alerted her to the infant, a boy, who had been wrapped in a towel and placed in a lawn chair.
The baby will remain at the Port Huron Hospital for several days and then be released to Children’s Protective Services.
Michigan’s Safe Delivery of Newborns law allows parents who aren’t prepared to care for their infants to leave them 72 hours after birth with employees inside a hospital, police station or fire station without penalty.
A neighborhood canvass seeking information about recently pregnant women yielded no information. Port Huron police Sgt. Dave Seghi said authorities’ primary concern is “first and foremost, OK.”Anyone who knows anything about the baby is asked to call (810) 987-6688.
