Sheriff's Department: Recent Thefts Are Opportunistic

Washtenaw County Sheriff's deputies are encouraging residents to remain vigilant in their neighborhoods.

A recent string of burglaries in western Washtenaw County is prompting the Sheriff’s Department to reach out to local residents.

“Burglars are opportunistic and look for the easiest way in and out," said Derrick Jackson, community engagement director for the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department. "The more you can secure your property, the less likely you are to have your home broken into.”

The department sent out an email alert Friday after a resident in the 9000 block of Jackson Road in Lima Township reported that a red Sears riding lawn mower was missing.

“Our deputies will come out, walk through your home and around your property with you in order to find those things that may leave you vulnerable to home invasions,” Jackson said. “Once we’re done, you will have a written report identifying where you are most vulnerable and be given suggestions on how to fix them.”
