Mary Burrows, a 53-year-old Pinckney woman was when her bicycle was hit by a vehicle near the intersection of North Territorial and Dexter-Pinckney roads in Dexter Township.
According to Derrick Jackson, community engagement director, Burrows was struck by a 2002 Mercury Sable driven by a male resident from Chelsea traveling westbound on North Territorial Road around 6:05 p.m.
"By all accounts, the victim was an experienced bicyclist, wore a helmet and was following all the proper safety precautions," Jackson said.
At some point Burrows stopped to rest in the ditch on the northwest corner of the intersection, re-entered the roadway on North Territorial Road against traffic in order to head southbound on Dexter-Pinckney Road when she was struck by the vehicle.
Jackson said the investigation is ongoing and no further information was available as of Wednesday afternoon.
"Obviously we need to investigate this further, but it appears that the driver saw the victim at the last minute and tried to stop," Jackson said.
Jackson said Burrows would have celebrated her birthday on Saturday.
