What this means: Village Trustee Joe Semifero said he attributes the village's growth to the school district and the downtown businesses.

"I think it has to do with all the reasons I moved here and all the things that makes Dexter great: the schools, the downtown, the surrounding area, and most of all the people and sense of community. That is what I hear from neighbors and friends," Semifero said.

Dexter Township

Population: Dexter Township saw a 14.7 percent increase in population, from 5,267 residents in 2000 to 6,042 in 2010.

Housing: The number of vacated homes in the township increased from 305 to 387.

Race: The township did not see any major changes in racial numbers through the decade, with 5,829 residents identifying themselves as white.

What this means: Patrick Sloan, director of planning and zoning for the township, said the township saw its largest growth between 2000 and 2005, with only three applications for new houses in 2011 and five applications in 2010.
