Dexter Election Primer for Tuesday's Presidential Primary

Voters must specify whether they want to vote a Republican or Democratic ticket.

Dexter voters will head to the polls Tuesday to weigh-in on which presidential candidate they'd like to see at the top of their political party's ticket.

The primary election is a "closed" primary, meaning voters must request a specific party's ballot at the polls. Voters do not have to be registered as an official member of that party to vote, but must indicate in writing whether they wish to vote a Republican or Democratic ballot.

Voters will not be required to select a political party in writing for the Nov. 6 general election, nor will they be required to vote for the same party as they voted in Tuesday.

On the Republican ticket, voters will choose between Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum. The Democratic ballot contains Barack Obama or uncommitted.

Michigan voters are required to show photo ID, either a driver's license or state issued ID, at the polls. If you forget, or do not have an acceptable form of ID, you can still vote, but must sign a brief affidavit stating that you're not in possession of a photo ID.
