The Dexter Village Council unanimously approved the purchase of a second house on Forest Street for $85,000 at its meeting Monday night.
The house, located at 8087 Forest St., will be demolished as part of a redevelopment project near downtown and will be the second foreclosed property the village will have purchased in recent months. In May, the village bought a house at 8077 Forest St. for $56,500.
Village Manager Donna Dettling said the village expects to purchase the house Aug. 18. She said inspectors estimate it will cost $20,000 to refurbish the property.
Trustee Donna Fisher said that if the property is worth salvaging, she would like to see it become a viable building to rent out to the , which wants to expand its location off of Main Street above .
However, the board said it is considering demolishing the structure, which is located near the Broad Street DAPCO Industries redevelopment area.
“I would just as rather take it down,” Trustee Paul Cousins said. “It is not an asset we should be paying $20,000 to rehabilitate.”
