Dexter Village Council Approves Tax Exemption for Dapco Industries

The company's expansion will bring 10 new jobs to the village, officials said.

The Dexter Village Council unanimously approved a 12-year tax abatement for at its regular meeting Monday night.

The company, located at 2500 Bishop Circle, submitted an Industrial Facilities Tax Exemption request to the village for approximately $1.2 million in new personal property and $879,180 in real property improvements at its facility, according to information provided by the village.

Dapco President Ronald Tupper said the company is planning an 8,500-square-foot addition to house screw machines in order to keep up with global demand for its component parts for small engines.

"I would like to thank the council for considering our request," Tupper said. "This tax abatement is important for Dapco to grow our business and create manufacturing jobs in Dexter. This exemption will help the company achieve those goals."

The abatement is valued at $7,300 in village taxes and approximately $23,000 in taxes from other entities, including Scio Township, the Dexter District Library, Dexter Community Schools, Washtenaw County and the Washtenaw Intermediate School District.

According to information provided by the village council, Dexter's industrial facilities tax abatement program "encourages new companies to invest in the community and assists existing companies as they continue to invest in their businesses."

The amount of temporary tax relief that a business is eligible for is based on the value of its investment in the community.

"The village benefits by receiving 50 percent of the tax revenue that we wouldn't otherwise have received if the company had not made the investment," village President Shawn Keough said. "In the case of Dapco Industries, the additional revenue is $7,300, which will be increased to $14,600 once the abatement expires."
