Dexter Village Council Extends Moratorium on Medical Marijuana Dispensaries into 2012

The extension will allow Dexter's community development director to study the state law.

For the third time since December, the Dexter Village Council has extended its moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries in the village.

The unanimous vote came at Monday’s Village Council meeting, following a recommendation by Community Development Manager Allison Bishop to extend the moratorium a full year. The current moratorium will expire July 18, 2012. Bishop said she will “continue to read literature on the law" and share it with the council throughout the year.

In March, the council extended the moratorium 120 days with the hope of working with neighboring municipalities to draft a uniform ordinance. However, outside of one informal meeting, little has materialized. In an interview last month, Patrick Sloan, director of building and zoning for Dexter Township, said the issue “wasn’t a low priority," but he didn't expect to meet with Dexter village officials again in the near future.

Bishop reported that construction on the bridge for the Washtenaw County Border-to-Border trail, which will connect Hudson Mills Metropark and Warrior Creek Park, will begin within two weeks. The council approved a funding agreement with the Washtenaw County Road Commission and Parks and Recreation Department in April. The trail is scheduled to be completed in September.
