Dexter Village Receives Transportation Economic Development Fund Grant

The $200,000 grant will be used to reconstruct Central Street from Second to Third Street in the village beginning in 2014.

The Michigan Department of Transportation has allocated $200,000 to the Village of Dexter to assist with the village's rehabilitation of Central Street.

According to a press release from MDOT, the village was one of nine municipalites to receive "Category F" funding in order to rehabilitate Central Street from Second Street to Third Street.

Category F funding is intended to expand or preserve all-season roads on commercial routes in the urban areas of rural counties. MDOT's decision to award funding to Dexter was based on the amount of commercial traffic on Central Street, connections to other roads, Category D routes (state trunklines), and the project's ability to improve safety and intermodal connectivity in the village.

Central Street is part of the village's designated truck route and provides connections to Main Street and Baker Road, the primary north-south route linking to I-94. The $333,334 project will receive $200,000 in state funding, with a $133,334 match from the village's street fund.

"MDOT is pleased to partner with cities, villages and county road commissions on projects that will improve the condition of these all-season routes and keep goods moving efficiently across Michigan," said state transportation director Kirk T. Steudle.

Courtney Nicholls, assistant village manager, said the project will be scheduled for summer 2014.

"We won't begin designing the project until we receive official notification that the Legislature has approved the funds closer to next year," she said.
