Dexter Cityhood Referendum Passes by 52 Votes

Village officials will be able to move forward with the process of turning Dexter into a city.

Dexter voters said "yes" on Tuesday to a proposal that will allow officials to continue to take steps toward turning the village into a city.

According to Dexter Village President Shawn Keough, the next steps are to elect a charter commission and draft a potential city charter.

The charter would need to be approved by the state before being put in front of residents for a public vote.

Jim Smith, co-chair of the Committee to Keep Dexter a Village, which was formed to oppose the cityhood push, said he was disappointed in the results, but is interested to see how the process develops.

"I appreciate all the people who exercised their right to vote today," Smith wrote in an email. "I will follow the process as it continues and, along with others, will be watching with great interest as a charter is drafted."
