Rep. Mark Ouimet Hosts Town Hall Meeting to Address Personal Property Tax Reform

Small business owners and residents can talk with Lt. Gov. Brian Calley during a question and answer forum on April 30.

Local small-business owners, elected officials and residents can learn about a new proposal to overhaul the state's personal property tax at a special town hall meeting on April 30.

The meeting, sponsored by state Rep. Mark Ouimet, R-Scio Township, will take place at the Washtenaw Intermediate School District, 1819 S. Wagner Road, in Ann Arbor from 6 to 8 p.m.

Lt. Gov. Brian Calley will discuss the proposal that could reduce or totally eliminate some portions of the personal property tax. Calley testified before a Senate committee last week in support of the proposal.

“The town hall meeting will give local business owners and municipal officials a chance to learn more about the reform proposal, and to ask any questions," Ouimet said. "The Legislature's top priority is to improve Michigan's economy, so we have a duty to consider any proposal that would potentially create more jobs. I look forward to an informative night.”

Michigan's personal property tax is a tax that businesses pay on such items as machinery, furniture and other equipment. Since some neighboring states don’t levy a similar tax, several legislators believe the tax puts Michigan at a disadvantage for retaining and attracting additional jobs.

The meeting is open to the public. Attendees will be able to ask Calley questions about the proposal.
