Washtenaw County Parks to Benefit from Special Funding

The Michigan Legislature earmarked thousands of dollars for mark improvement projects across Washtenaw County.

The people of Washtenaw County will be able to enjoy an improved parks system if Gov. Snyder signs legislation that the Michigan Legislature formally approved this month. The bill provides key funding for three area parks projects.

A total of $2.2 million will be allocated for Arbor Vistas Preserve Natural Areas to purchase 54 acres of urban nature area to connect two nature preserves. The funding will safeguard a large tract of land to help sustain wildlife, give residents a more serene recreation experience and help lessen the effect of fragmented forestlands.

A total of $300,000 also will be allocated for Gallup Park livery and site renovations in the City of Ann Arbor. Renovations include barrier-free access to building, energy improvements, barrier-free docks for boating and fishing, patio area, building structure updates and trail improvements. These improvements will help more residents experience the joy of the outdoors.

Another project provides $300,000 for Veterans Memorial Park's in-ground skate park development in the City of Ann Arbor. Skateboarding is an excellent form of exercise for young people, and a new park will provide riders with a safe environment in which to skate.

House Bill 5364 provides nearly $40 million for statewide acquisition and development projects through the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Trust Fund. Projects are supported by revenues from state-owned mineral resources, not taxpayer funding.

Michigan leases some state land to private companies for oil and gas mineral exploration. The state awards leases after auctions for subsurface rights. Revenue from leases goes into the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund, which was created by our constitution. The fund then provides financial assistance to local governments and the Department of Natural Resources to purchase land or improve public recreation or protection of land because of its environmental importance or scenic beauty.

The trust fund has been an extremely effective tool to enhance Michigan's park system, and our area certainly is a huge beneficiary in this round of funding. Washtenaw County's parks and natural areas will get even better, and provide families with top-notch recreational facilities. The funding also helps our local economy by putting more people to work.

As you continue to enjoy your summer, please stop by one of our many local parks if you get a chance. We already have an extensive park system and a host of activities to participate in. More information can be found at http://www.ewashtenaw.org/government/departments/parks_recreation.
