Dennis Desmarias, Dexter Interim Superintendent Candidate, Will Meet With Staff Friday

The former superintendent from Riverview is being vetted to fill a vacancy in the Dexter Community Schools district beginning Jan. 1, 2013.

Dexter Community Schools faculty and staff will have the opportunity to meet with Dennis Desmarias, the district's candidate for interim superintendent, at an informal meet and greet on Friday.

Desmarias, a former superintendent from Riverview Community School District, will tour the district and talk with building principals, support staff, and union representatives as part of the superintendent search committee's interview process.

"We know we need to have an interim superintendent in the district by the time (Superintendent Mary Marshall) leaves at the end of December," school board president Larry Cobler said. "We won't finish the process for hiring a permanent superintendent until April or May."

Desmarias' background in education includes assistant principal and athletic director at Napoleon Community School; assistant superintendent at Northwest School for Hearing-Impaired Children; and most recently, superintendent at Riverview School District.

"Representatives from the superintendent search committee met with Mr. Desmarias, and we were all impressed with his knowledge. He has a lot of experience as superintendent," Cobler said. "We asked him to come and meet the rest of the building principals and staff before making any decisions."

Cobler said Desmarias is currently the only candidate being considered for the interim position, and was recommended by the Michigan Leadership Institution.

Following Friday's meeting, Cobler said the board could make a decision as early as Dec. 17 to hire Desmarias temporarily. Cobler said there are no plans to offer Desmarias a permanent position.

Once a decision is made, Cobler said the board will schedule a public meeting to introduce the interim candidate.

"This is an abbreviated process; we're doing things more quickly than we normally would during the permanent superintendent search," Cobler said.

Mary Marshall, the district's current superintendent, was recently hired at Pentwater School District, and will leave the district on Dec. 31.

Desmarias will meet with district staff at the Copeland Administration Building throughout the day on Friday.

Desmarias has my vote if he can implement the same transparency that he brought to Riverview that is so desparately needed in Dexter. An example of that..."Riverview Schools Superintendent, Dennis Desmarais, whose school meetings are shown on both the cable channel and PEG Central feels that adding the video streaming option was great for those residents who can’t make it to meetings. “We’ve received a very positive reaction from it. I think people appreciate the availability, they appreciate the transparency, and they appreciate being informed,” Desmarais said. “We live in a world where people can’t all sit in one place at one time because of their schedules, so it’s the convenience and the availability to be able to watch and stay informed that’s made our PEG Central account so popular.” If he can't get that done, then he has no business being considered as a permanent hire and the failure reflects the true nature of the trustees we currently have leading (sic) the district. What a failure the board has been on this topic of transparancey. Read any of the meeting minutes and you get no sense of what is gooing on or will go on. Spending tens of thousands of $ on a strategic plan that says what a plan should say, but having no specific plan in and of itself. Title IX meeting that displaces a scheduled game and we hear nothing? Why? Why in Dexter? New focus on sponsorship? Really, it was a focus 10 years ago with no new $$$ then!

"Desmarias' background in education includes assistant principal and athletic director at Napoleon Community School; assistant superintendent at Northwest School for Hearing-Impaired Children; and most recently, superintendent at Riverview School District." His experience sounds well matched for Dexter given all the issues with special ed, athletics, academics, etc. It would be great if he could provide a forum or opportunity for parents of the district to express their concerns without the 5 minute rule of board meetings. Use of technology could greatly help with this!
