Dexter Board of Education Trustee Resigns But Will Remain in District

Kim Covert will serve as the community education programming coordinator for Dexter.

The Dexter Community Schools Board of Education is seeking to fill a vacancy following the resignation of Trustee Kim Covert this week.

Covert, who was elected to the board in 2007, resigned to accept a position as community education programming coordinator for the district. She will begin the new job effective Jan. 16.

"I resigned to go back to work full-time," said Covert, a stay-at-home mom. "My husband's job is changing and I was able to find a position with Dexter Schools. However, I can't serve on the board and work as a district employee."

Covert said she enjoyed her time on the board and was looking forward to serving out the remainder of her term, which ends in 2013.

"My decision to resign was with a fair amount of regret," she said. "Life changes, the economy changes and at some point you have to make a decision that is best for your family.

"I loved serving on the board. I had a lot of fun and I treated it seriously. I learned a lot about how a school district operates and how seven different people with seven completely different backgrounds can come to a consensus that ultimately benefits the students."

President Larry Cobler said Covert has been a valuable member on the board.

"Kim has been a wonderful member of the board and we'll be sad to see her go," Cobler said. "She has provided unique insights to our board deliberations and at the same time has worked collaboratively with all the members to come up with the best decisions. I understand Kim is leaving because of family reasons and we wish her the best in her new endeavors."

Superintendent Mary Marshall said Covert's previous skills as recreation and enrichment coordinator for Saline Area Schools from 1999-2003 was an important criteria during the interview process.

"We went through the normal hiring process and Kim's skills rose her above the rest of the candidates," Marshall said. "She will be a fabulous addition to the district."

Applications for Covert's seat can be sent to Superintendent Mary Marshall's office, 7714 Ann Arbor St., Dexter, MI. 48130. All interested applicants must submit a personal statement describing their interest and experience related to public schools. All materials must be received by 4 p.m., Jan. 20. Interviews will be conducted if there is more than one applicant and a decision will be made at a special school board meeting on Jan. 30.

"The person who takes the job should recognize the importance of their position and make good decisions that affect everyone in the community," Covert said.
