Dexter Golfers Gain Experience in Brighton Tournament

The Dreadnaughts finished in 11th place on Monday.

BRIGHTON — It was a good chance for the girls golf team to gain some valuable experience at the Bill Miller Invitational in Brighton Monday.

The Dreadnaughts got to go up against some of the top teams in the state at the 15-team tournament.

“I look at this as preparation for the postseason,” Dexter coach Fred Ligrow said. “Our team goal was to break 390 and we just missed. It was a solid effort.”

Host Brighton is ranked No. 12 in Division 1 by the Michigan Interscholastic Golf Coaches Association. The Bulldogs won the tournament, formerly known as the Brighton Invitational, with a team score of 332.

Dexter, which competes in Division 2, shot 391 as a team, finishing in a tie for 11th place with Traverse City West, a Division 1 school.

Holt, ranked No. 3 in Division 1, and Northville, ranked No. 10 in Division 1, placed third and tied for fourth, respectively, with scores of 350 and 352.

East Lansing, ranked No. 6 in Division 2, and Traverse City Central, ranked No. 2 in Division 2, placed tied for fourth and eighth, respectively, with scores of 352 and 374.

Dani Schlaff led Dexter with a score of 90.

“I did decent,” she said. “I could’ve done better, but it’s not the worst I’ve ever done. It just wasn’t our day.”

Despite the struggles, Schlaff enjoyed the tournament.

“It was fun,” she said. “It’s a really good course. It’s really nice.”

Rounding out the scoring for Dexter were Mary So, with a 97, Lauren Kimmel, with a 102, and Morgan Campbell, with a 102.

“We just need to eliminate more shots around the greens and avoid the blow-up holes,” Ligrow said. “This is a young team, though, so hopefully with time we’ll improve.”

Dexter will compete in a regional tournament hosted by Farmington Hills Mercy on Oct. 7. Pinckney, which shot a 413 and placed 15th Monday, will also be in that regional. The top three teams move on to state competition.

Dexter hosts Ann Arbor Pioneer, Saline and Chelsea at Ann Arbor Country Club on Wednesday in Southeastern Conference action. Saline shot a 359 and Pioneer a 377 at Monday’s tournament in Brighton.
