By Amy M. Moorman

As we begin to move on in life, many of us wonder what we’ll aspire to be, what we’ll become, and if the two differ as the future unfolds. We leave these familiar halls today and seek out our new tomorrows in college, the workforce, the military, and other paths in life. Often, the idea of leaving this familiar routine frightens me, as I’m sure if frightens us all. However, in this moment we must remember that it is in moments like these in which we find greatness; moments of fright where we find strength, moments of insecurity where we find courage, and moments of doubt where we find clarity.

These are the moments in our past that guided us, these moments in our present that enable us, and these are the moments in our futures that define us. We all hold the ability for greatness in our souls. To seek greatness is foolish, for we do not need to search when it is in ourselves. One must seek to be great. The task to be great has the facade of being unreachable and elusive however, you must look to yourself for inspiration. You must desire greatness, invoke greatness, inspire greatness, and in doing this, you will become great.

It is not the destination that makes us great; it is the journey. To be great has its own definition inside ourselves, because to be great has many faces. Whether it’s to be a doctor, a writer, a scientist, a teacher, airman, sailor, soldier, or Marine. I’ll be on my own personal journey at Fort Sill Oklahoma, where I plan to become a soldier. Any dream, as long as you dream it, fight for it, and never let it go, is a great dream. That is greatness. The desire, the fire, the drive is greatness. You must find greatness in the paths you wish to take and you can.

It’s only a matter of if you will be brave enough to get out of bed, face the day, and give life your all. That is to be great. With this challenge and the challenges we all now face, my belief in internal greatness is strengthened. I believe that it is it is foolish to seek inspiration and greatness from others; it is internal, carnal, and a drive to not just live, but thrive that makes us take action for what we dream.

In saying this, I reiterate that any dream is plausible, any idea is possible, and everyday is a new opportunity. It is my firm belief that the future is bright for all of us. As I also believe that greatness begets greatness, and you all,

Best of luck, Class of 2012, see you in a few years!
