Dexter Schools Rank in Top 20 Percent of Public Schools in Michigan

Dexter Community Schools was ranked among the top 20 percent of schools statewide in a "Top-to-Bottom" ranking of public schools released today.

and ranked in the top 10 percent while the district's other schools were not far behind.

The Top-to-Bottom ranking includes all public schools and is based on student proficiency and improvement in math, reading, writing, science and social studies, as well as graduation rate and achievement gaps between students within a school.

"The Top-to-Bottom rankings that were released by the state today are another indicator that our students are academically successful and the district is successfully striving for continuous improvement," Superintendent Mary Marshall said. "I am not sure I see the need to rank schools in order to make this assessment, however I do think having a system to benchmark your effectiveness is important.

"The benchmark rankings confirm that we are moving in the right direction and still have room to improve. This is a district and a community that prides itself in finding better ways to be effective with students, yet humbly celebrates that there are some pretty amazing opportunities for our students in place, and as a whole, we are effectively supporting the academic achievement of our students."

In addition to the Top-to-Bottom ranking, the Michigan Department of Education is required each year to produce a list of persistently lowest achieving schools. None of Dexter's schools were among those labeled as "persistently lowest achieving."

The chart below reflects how the individual Dexter schools ranked. A percentile rank of 99, for example, means that 99 percent of schools statewide scored below that school's result.
