Bridging the Gap

Many educational institutions and organizations have multi-lingual students and staff who could serve as interpreters – with the proper training. University of Michigan Health Services (UMHS) Interpreter Services offers a course – Bridging the Gap – to teach aspiring medical interpreters the skills they need to interpret competently. The University of Michigan Health System is Michigan’s first licensed Bridging the Gap provider.

This 40 hour course is open to current and aspiring medical interpreters and is taught by an authorized Bridging the Gap trainer. The class teaches interpreting skills, techniques and ethics, cultural competency, professional development, basic medical information and communication skills.
