How Buying a House in Dexter Helps Schools (It’s Not What You Think)

If you think an increased tax base is the only way a robust real estate market helps schools, think again.

A Dexter real estate agent is pledging a percentage of each home she sells to Dexter Community Schools to support its International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, according to a news release.

“As a parent and member of the community, this is my way of giving back,” said Janet McAllister, a Realtor with The Charles Reinhart Co.

The donated funds will also help support programs for students throughout the school district.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, based out of Geneva, Switzerland, is an academically challenging program for students ages 16 to 19. The program will cost about $119,000 for the first year, $124,000 the second year, and $79,000 for consecutive years due to a full-time coordinator of the program changing to half-time in the third year. Of that amount, $10,000 will be required for the district to register with the program.

IB provides students with a rigorous course schedule that can be stated on college admission forms in a similar way to the Advanced Placement (AP) program.

Superintendent Christopher Timmis said the structure of the donation will provide ongoing funding tied between growth of the community and the students served by the school district.

“The community support for our schools is tremendous,” Timmis said. “The generosity of Mrs. McAllister speaks volumes for the amazing support of our students.”

Timmis said McAllister’s pledge is another example of community generosity to help support the school district and its students.

“We are blessed to have such wonderful and caring community leaders interested in supporting our schools, and we want to thank Mrs. McAllister for her generosity,” he said.
