Photo Gallery: Bates Elementary Students Read with Dogs

First grade students in Dexter spent the day with Beezer, a Newfoundland dog, during a special presentation on Feb. 5.

First-grade students at Bates Elementary School in Dexter welcomed a furry reading buddy to class recently.

Pat Schutte, whose daughter Katie is in teacher Maureen Kline's class, brought her Newfoundland dog, Beezer, to the school.

Students all got some time to read books to Beezer as part of a program to help students gain confidence.

"We did dog-themed math, too," Kline said. "It was great fun."

Schutte said the 194-pound Landseer Newfoundland is similiar to a St. Bernard. While normally all black in color, Newfies can sometimes be black and white, she said.
