School Scene: Dexter Students Visit Hudson Mills Metropark

Preschool students in the 'Young Fives' program learn about nature during a walking tour of the metropark.

Preschool students in Stephanie Coy’s and Emily Thompson's class at and elementary schools in Dexter were treated to a tour of last week for a "Colors of Autumn" guided tour.

The students learned about nature, specifically how the trees and leaves respond to the changing seasons. Students took a short hike and learned about why leaves change their color and fall from the trees. They also learned about the parts of a plant and their functions.  Students even learned to identify several species of trees.

“My class collected leaves to take back to school so we could continue to explore, sort and even do crafts,” Coy said.

Coy said the group's tour guide also shared a folktale about how the trees helped a wounded bird during the cold winter months.

“They (students) liked the hike and collecting leaves, too” she said.

Coy said for many students, this was their first field trip and even their first time on a bus.

“The kids kept saying how much they enjoyed walking through the woods," she said.
