The Ann Arbor Country Club swim team capped off their summer season on Friday with an awards ceremony and barbecue.
The club placed third overall in the 51st annual Washtenaw Interclub Swim Conference Championship. The team scored 1,582 points behind the Dexter Community Aquatic Club (2,197 points) and Huron Valley Swim Club (3,599 points).
“We were better than last year,” swim coach John Burch said. “What it comes down to is the number of kids on your team. Huron Valley has three times as many kids as we do. We’re focused on the kids having fun and learning how to swim.”
Burch said some of this year’s championship highlights for the club included Jay Lang’s third place finish in the 9- and 10-year-old boys diving competition, the first place winning team of Alex Janosi, David Merz, Andy Dolen and Ben Daugherty in the boys’ 11- and 12-year-old category, and other milestones.
“We have some really good swimmers,” he said. “Our goal was to make this an enjoyable experience for everyone.”
Burch said he was particularly proud of the 9- and 10-year-old girls team.
“They are the future of the Ann Arbor Country Club,” he said.
