Chelsea Martial Arts School Sends 4 to Regional Competition

Competitors from Michigan, Ohio and Indiana will gather at Tecumseh this weekend.

Chelsea ATA Martial Arts is sending several of its students to the regional tournament at Tecumseh High School, 760 Brown St., Nov. 8-9, when they will join an estimated 800 competitors of all ages from Michigan, Ohio and Indiana.

In regional testing Friday, three members of the school’s staff will compete in mid-term testing and one, Gabriel Walters, will be testing for the rank for second degree black belt.

The mid-termers from Chelsea include Brandy Righter, Emma Walters, and Noah Walters all of whom will be mid-terming toward their next rank of third-degree black belt.  

“As a family that trains and instructs the Chelsea school together, we are all very proud of our leaders and their accomplishments,” Senior Master Tomas Sandoval said in a news release.

Chelsea ATA Martial Arts is one of the seven schools where students learn under the tutelage Sandoval, the chief Instructor and an eighth-degree black belt. Dan Righter, a fifth-degree black belt is the manager, along with his family – his wife, Brandy Righter, and his children, Emma, Noah and Gabriel Walters.

The school is located at 420 N. Main St.t behind the Chelsea Teddy Bear Factory and Chelsea Ale House.

As the world’s largest martial arts organization with more than 1 million members, the ATA (American Taekwondo Association) instructs students from ages 4 though adult in more than just kicking and punching.  

The school’s highly trained, certified instructors help create leaders in the community enforcing life skills such as respect, discipline, loyalty, integrity and honor.

Friday, Nov. 8

6:30 p.m.: regional testing

Saturday, Nov. 9

8:30 a.m.: adult black belts

9:45 a.m.: adult black belts extreme/creative

10:30 a.m.: opening ceremonies

11:30 a.m.: Tiny Tigers, novice (all ages and ranks), junior black belt extreme/creative; color best extreme/creative; special abilities; girls’ W/O/Y; men’s fourth- and fifth degree.

12:30 p.m.: Boys’ and girls’ W/O/Y; boys’ and girls’ C/G/P; boys’ and girls’ 8 and under first-, second- and third-degree; boys’ and girls’ 9-11 first-degree; men’s fourth- and fifth-degree.

2 p.m.: boys’ and girls’ B/BR/R; boys’ and girls’ 9-11 second- and third-degree; boys’ and girls’ 12-14 first-degree; boys’ and girls’ 12-14 second- and third-degree;  

3:30 p.m.: color belt, adults; boys’ and girls’ 15-17 first-degree; boys’ and girls’ 15-17 second- and third-degree.
