NEW BOSTON — The boys' cross country team will be making its appearance at the Division 1 state finals this week after taking first at Saturday's regional meet at Willow Metropark.
"It was a tremendously close race between us, Ann Arbor Pioneer and Pinckney," coach Takashi Gould said.
Top runners were Matt Greve (16:27), Taylor Neely (16:35), Alexey Vermeulen (16:38) Joe Wendorf (16:44), Zack Dutcher (16:51) Tim Bougher (16:54) and Mike Hauke (17:08).
"The course ran really sloppy. It rained a lot the previous couple nights and the whole thing was just muddy as can be," Gould said. "Our boys got out quick and did a good job staying away from most of the traffic. I would say there was a large pack until about 2,800-3,000 meters, where the top five finishers broke away. From there the boys just focused on making sure to finish strong and helping each other out through the race."
Gould said one of the team's goals coming into the meet was getting five members in the top 20 spots.
"Being able to win a tough regional is a huge confidence builder for us, but at the same time we can't afford to get carried away because the other two teams ran great races as well," Gould said. "We're very proud to be able to continue the tradition of excellence here at Dexter, but like I said we have to regroup and refocus on Saturday."
The Division 1 state finals will be held Saturday at Michigan International Speedway.
