Dexter Girls' Offense Squeeze by Tecumseh for 3-1 Victory

The Dexter High School girls' soccer team will begin district play on Saturday.

Only leading 1-0 at halftime, the Dexter Dreadnaughts' scoring was held to a minimum by a strong Indian defense and a goal that was called back, that actually should have been allowed.

The Dexter women’s soccer team traveled to Tecumseh on Thursday and found themselves facing a defense that played with four in the back and two defensive midfielders that dropped back every time the Dreads possessed the ball.

With a bit of patience along with a bit of frustration, the Dreadnaughts did create some scoring chances but couldn’t score. Finally with just under 19 minutes into the game, Alex Dinser slipped a ball in between two defenders on to Olivia Vollmers' run. Vollmers cut the ball past an onrushing defender and fired a well placed ball into the goal.

Tecumseh would hold onto that score line to the half-time break while only able to push the ball forward into Dexter’s half on a few occasions and not really able to get any quality shots on goal.

Fourteen minutes into the second half, Vollemers scored her second goal of the match, with a shot from 18 yards out after receiving a pass from Nicole Lucas. Nine minutes later, Kat Kerska passed a ball in from the left side, finding Kaitlin Kivi in the middle of the field. She controlled the ball and soon realized she had time and space to set up for her goal from 21 yards out.

Dexter’s final goal came after the Tecumseh keeper handled the ball outside of the box, lost it and Dread’s forward Nicole Lucas passed the ball into the net.

The Dreadnaughts were happy with the win as they came away with a well deserved victory.

“We faced a tough defense tonight that relied on a counter attack to get their chances," coach Scott Forrester said. "With our defense, it wasn’t going to happen. Ashley Kunsman got the start, along with Maddie Judge, Andi Kimball and Jamie Verbal playing in the back line; keeper Sarah Silvasi had little to do. Tecumseh had a solid defensive game plan that frustrated us a bit, but we were able to solve some of the issues in the second half.”

The Dreadnaughts will enter the first round of district play at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
