Dexter Girls' Soccer Team Wins 11th District Championship

The Dreadnaughts swept their opponents in district playoffs at Tecumseh on Saturday.

The Dexter High School girls' soccer team took home the district championship crown for the 11th year after defeating Milan, 4-0, in Tecumseh this weekend.

It only took 1 minute and 18 seconds for the Dreads to set the tone for the championship match. Defender, Andi Kimball sent a long ball forward to Alex Dinser, who played a quick ball into Nicole Lucas, who controlled it and fired it into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.

Dexter went on to create additional chances but found it difficult to break down a defense that stood strong stopping the Dexter's offense. Milan’s plan worked to stave off any further scoring and held on to the 1-0 deficit. Just over 10 minutes into the second half, Dinser again played the ball to Lucas, who took her defender on, and fired a shot in at an awkward angle for her second goal of the match.

Nine minutes later, Jamie Verbal played a ball into the box, it bounced around a couple of times and Olivia Vollmers’ hard work was rewarded when she touched it past the keeper, scoring 3-0 for Dexter. The Dreadnaughts' final goal came with nine and a half minutes left in the game, when Lindsey Lloyd crossed a ball in to Hanna Ruble for the final 4-0 score.

“This is what it is to be part of the Dexter soccer tradition,” coach Scott Forrester said. “The team was challenged in these district games to show patience and creativity with how they attacked tight spaces. Now we move on to meet Ladywood, a team that we lost to in regionals last year.”

The regional semifinal will be played Tuesday night at Trenton High School, with kick-off at 5:30 p.m. It will pit the second-ranked Livonia Ladywood Blazers (21-2-2) against the sixth-ranked Dexter Dreadnaughts (18-2-2).
