Dexter Rallies to Defeat Ypsilanti With Overtime Win

Dexter maintains momentum with a 34-28 victory over the Phoenix on Friday.

Dexter football won its second consecutive game defeating host Ypsilanti 34-28 in overtime Friday night. The Dreadnaughts (3-4) rallied from a 28-6 halftime deficit to beat the Phoenix for the third year in a row.

Dexter looked anything like a winner in the first half, as Ypsilanti (1-6) marched up and down the field seemingly at will. On their second drive of the game, the Phoenix hit pay dirt as Devon Thompson scored on an 11-yard run. The two-point conversion pass from quarterback Darryl Tipton to Darian Reeves was successful, giving Ypsilanti an 8-0 lead with 3:21 remaining in the first quarter.

The Dreadnaughts answered right back on their following possession as quarterback Mike Mioduszewski hit Jay Lewis for a 60-yard touchdown pass. The Phoenix defense held firm stopping Dexter’s two-point attempt. With the defensive stop, Ypsilanti continued leading 8-6 with 1:32 left in the first quarter.

The Phoenix increased their advantage scoring on a 14-yard run by Thompson on the ensuing drive. The possession was keyed by Tipton’s 41-yard scramble on the drive’s first play. Dexter stuffed Ypsilanti’s two-point attempt. Despite failing on their two-point conversion, the Phoenix upped their lead to 14-6 with 1:11 left in the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, Thompson scored his third touchdown of the night on a 16-yard run. The two-point run was stopped short giving Ypsilanti a 20-6 lead with 9:45 remaining in the first half.

On the Dreadnaughts’ following possession, Phoenix linebacker Brandon Jordan picked off a Mioduszewski pass, returning the ball to Ypsilanti’s 40-yard line. Eight plays later, Tipton scored on a 7-yard run. Austin Sanders ran in the two-point conversion, increasing the Phoenix lead to 28-6 with 4:33 left in the second quarter.

At 7:19 of the third quarter, Jacob Van Hoof caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Mioduszewski. Hank Dreffs snagged the two-point conversion pass from Mioduszewski bringing Dexter closer at 28-14.

Four minutes later, Mioduszewski ran for a 6-yard touchdown. Dvon Newsham kicked the extra point, trimming Ypsilanti’s lead to 28-21 with 3:19 left in the third quarter.

With 2:44 remaining in the fourth quarter, Lewis scored on a 5-yard pass from Mioduszewski. Newsham drilled the point after touchdown kick, tying the game at 28-28 and forcing overtime.

The Phoenix took possession of the ball first in the extra session. Two plays into Ypsilanti’s drive, Tipton fumbled near the goal line as Jake Stegemann pounced on the loose ball for the Dreadnaughts.

On Dexter’s first play from scrimmage following the turnover, Mioduszewski sprinted in from 10 yards out for the game-winning touchdown and the night’s final 34-28 margin.

Mioduszewski finished 20-of-36 passing for 241 yards with one interception and three touchdowns. On the ground, he ended up with 67 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns.

Lewis had a team-high eight receptions for 147 yards and two scores, while Dreffs had five catches for 41 yards. Tony Shiguango added 30 yards rushing on six attempts for the Dreadnaughts.

On defense, Stegemann led the way with eight tackles, while Jake Haviland, Josh Boren and Lewis each had seven stops for Dexter.

The Dreadnaughts next host county rival Chelsea 7 p.m. Oct. 14.n The Bulldogs (6-1) are coming off a 42-28 win over Tecumseh. Earlier this season, Chelsea defeated Ypsilanti 10-6 in week four. Dexter has not beaten the Bulldogs since 1995.
