Dexter Varsity Boys Basketball Suffers Loss to Canton

Canton offense dominates the court to lead the chiefs to a 39-44 win on Friday.

It was a battle of the defenses on Friday as the Dexter Dreadnaughts and Canton Chiefs took to the court in a strong matchup.

The Dexter boys varsity basketball team (1-1) came out of the box strong, taking an early 10-0 lead against Canton (2-0) in the first quarter.

Canton's offense quickly kicked in and scrambled past Dexter to dominate the court in the second quarter, with a 20-14 lead at half-time.

In the third and fourth quarter, Canton exploded on the court, with junior Josh Mayberry leading the pack.

"Both teams played really well tonight," Canton coach Jim Reddy said. "We started off sluggish but found our momentum in the second and third quarters."

Reddy credits Mayberry's performance for the game win.

"Any win on the road is a good win," Reddy said. "Dexter plays really well but we were able to get out in front of the ball and score some crucial plays."

Dexter Coach Randy Swoverland said the loss for Dexter was hard, but he's optimistic the team will rebound.

"We have to generate more offense and get in the 50s and 60s," he said. "I'm pleased with our defense, but we have a way to go on our offense."

Swoverland said key players leading Dexter were senior Jay Lewis and senior Mike Mioduszewski.

"Mike gave us a solid performance tonight," he said.

Dexter next travels to Monroe on Dec. 16. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
