Fall Sports Preview: Dexter Boys Tennis Team Gears Up for Season

The Dreadnaughts will return several key players to their lineup in 2011.

boys tennis team returns plenty of talent from last year’s squad, which finished second in the Southeastern Conference White Division and fifth at the state regional.

“Our goals this year are to win the SEC White Division, win at least one of our weekend tournaments and do well enough in the regional tournament to qualify for states,” said Dexter coach Mike Dziama, entering his seventh season.

Returning to pace the Dreadnaughts will be junior Jake Currie. Also being counted on in singles play for Dexter this year will be juniors Nick Gagalis and Mitch Kimball.

In doubles, the No. 1 pair of junior Anthony Quail and sophomore Graham Northrup returns, as does the No. 2 doubles twosome of juniors Aman Mandair and A.J. Sterlitz. At No. 3 doubles, the Dreadnaughts return junior Kyle Worthy and sophomore Michael DeZeeuw. Also seeing time in the doubles flight for Dexter this year will be sophomore Collin Ullmann.

Top newcomers to the Dreadnaught program this season include freshman singles player Sam Gough and doubles players junior Nate Nuttle and freshmen Spencer Paulison and Matthew Rose.

Dziama said he’s excited about this year’s overall potential.

“All our doubles tandems are new for this year, but if they work together and play together as a team, they should do well, and this concern will become a strength,” he said.

“Our singles players are our strength this year," Dziama said. "Our singles were improved even further with the addition of freshman Sam Gough to the lineup.”
