Courtney Cook, Dexter High School Alum, Named 2012 Chelsea Fair Queen

The Dexter graduate bested five other teens to take the coveted fair crown during Chelsea's 75th annual pageant on Friday.

As retiring gently placed the tiara on her head, Courtney Cook of Lima Township closed her eyes.

"I couldn't believe it," the newly-crowned 2012 Chelsea Community Fair queen admitted on Friday. "I thought I was dreaming."

Cook, 18, who graduated from Dexter High School this year and is headed to Central Michigan University, is the daughter of Phil and Terri Cook. She said she has attended the fair for several years but never dreamed of becoming the crown's next recepient.

Cook was sponsored by Rick Eder of Farm Bureau Insurance.

A field of six young women competed for the fair queen title, including Tonya Heimerdinger, Marieke De Meijer, Samantha Bies, Kaylin Zocharski, and Bonnie Bairley.

The teens had a personal interview on Thursday morning with a panel of judges. The girls were also ranked on several categories including talent, poise, onstage questions and community service.

For her talent portion of the pageant, Cook showed off her sewing and design skills with a mini fashion show.

"This whole experience has been incredible," Cook said holding back tears. "All of these girls are queens. I want to thank my family, especially my mom, who has been very supportive of me."

Cook participates in Washtenaw County 4-H, softball, cheerleading, several school clubs, and is in the youth group at . She will receive a $1,000 college scholarship provided by the Chelsea Fair Board.

The pageant's other winners included Samantha Bies of Dexter, first runner-up and Miss Congeniality; and Tonya Heimerdinger of Chelsea, second runner-up.
